What real sterling silver is

Sterling silver is an alloy of 92.5% silver and 7.5% other metal, usually copper, and that 925 figure is why the hallmark reads 925. The copper is added to make the alloy hard enough to hold a setting and a shape, and it is also why sterling tarnishes, because the copper reacts with the air. The purity of 92.5% is fixed by law in most markets, so a piece stamped 925 in the United States, the United Kingdom or the European Union is the same alloy. A piece of sterling can be 925, 999 fine silver or 800, and only the 925 stamp is the one to look for when you are checking a piece of jewellery. Fine silver at 999 is softer, and 800 is a lower grade, so 925 is the number that defines sterling and the number this page is built around.

Test 1: the magnet test

To run the magnet test, hold a strong neodymium magnet to the flat part of the piece, and a real piece of sterling silver stays completely still. Sterling silver is not magnetic, so there is no pull, no snap and no tick. If the piece jumps to the magnet, it is not solid sterling silver. Test 2: the hallmark check

The 925 stamp tells you the alloy is 92.5% silver, and it is the single most important mark because it is the one that legally defines sterling. Look closely at how the number sits, because a real stamp is struck into the metal and the edges are sharp, while a fake stamp is often painted, etched or shallow and it wears off fast. If the piece is not marked at all, you can still tell sterling silver is real with the other tests, but the missing hallmark means the piece has no documented purity, and that is a reason to be careful. Test 3: the sound test

To run the sound test, tap the piece lightly against a hard surface with a metal object, and a real piece of sterling silver rings clear and high, with a tone that carries for a beat. A plated or a steel fake gives a flat thud with little carry. The ring comes from the density and the elasticity of the alloy, and it is the same reason a silver coin sings when you drop it on the counter. The sound test works best on a piece with some mass, such as a ring, a coin or a flatware fork, and it is less reliable on a thin chain that rings on everything. If the ring is bright and the decay is short, that is the sound of a genuine piece, and if the tone is dead and short, that is the sound of a hollow or a plated fake.

Test 4: the weight test

To run the weight test, weigh the piece on a small scale and compare it against what a piece of its size should hold. Sterling silver has a density of about 10.5 grams per cubic centimetre, so a solid piece feels heavier in the hand than a plated piece of the same size. A 1 cm cube of sterling silver weighs 10.5 grams, and a fake steel core will be lighter by a lot. The weight test is a good second check because it is hard to fake density, and a piece that feels light for its size is usually a plated piece with a hollow or a steel body. Test 5: the ice test

To run the ice test, place an ice cube on the flat part of the piece and watch how fast it melts. Sterling silver conducts heat well, so an ice cube on a genuine piece of sterling silver melts faster than the same cube on a plate or a counter. A plated piece leaves the cloth clean, because the plating is a different metal and it does not grain the same way. If the cloth picks up a grey or black grain, that is a sign of a genuine piece, and if the cloth stays white, that is a sign of a plated or a fake piece.

Test 7: the coin scratch test

To run the coin scratch test, scratch a small, hidden spot on the piece with the edge of a clean coin and look at the streak. A real piece of sterling silver gives a smooth grey streak with no colour transfer, because the alloy is a single metal. A plated piece gives a white streak or a faint colour transfer, because the plating peels back to reveal the metal underneath.
